Classrooms

Our classrooms are small and intimate to allow for individual attention and growth.  We rarely exceed 12 children in each classroom as we find that numbers over 12 do not allow us to give children the individual attention they both need and deserve.  Each class grouping is comprised of at least 2 grade levels.  These configurations change each year depending on enrollment and the children’s academic and social needs.  In keeping with our emphasis on nature, each class has a ”tribe” name identifying them with an animal that can be seen in our area

Bharatis1stgradeInspired by the teaching in the Reggio Emilia schools in Italy, our classroom environments are very thoughtfully arranged with an abundance of natural materials and decorated to create a homey feel.

We consider the outdoors an extension of the classroom and children are often seen outdoors, investigating nature, writing and reading, hiking, eating, or working on a special project.  In conjunction with Flying Deer, we utilize three main campsites for our nature learning on Flying Deer days which often contain a fire pit, a handmade shelter and places for climbing.
